A
Little About Our Town of Elkton!
Situated at the junction of Elk Creek and the
Umpqua River,
Elkton was settled in the 1850s. The Hudson’s Bay Company
maintained Fort
Umpqua in the vicinity, and Elkton was an early-day Douglas County
seat.
Settlers planted fields of wheat, while loggers went to work clearing
the
woods. The raw products ended up at the Elkton Saw and Flouring Mills.
The town has a long history of fires and floods, and few original
structures
remain. There are a few stores that serve residents and travelers on
Highway
38, which passes through Elkton from the Oregon Coast to Interstate 5.
